Hampshire Studies

The Society’s annual publication first appeared in 1885. The title Hampshire Studies was first used for Volume 51 in 1996. The official title is still Proceedings of the Hampshire Field Club & Archaeological Society.
Hampshire Studies is an annual publication, usually printed in November, containing papers relating to the natural history, geology, landscape, archaeology, history, historic buildings and ancient monuments of the county. Hard copies are available as part of a subscription, or for purchase (where applicable).
Many are now out of print, but it is the Society’s aim to make them freely available digitally, with the exception of the most recent three issues (which can be purchased).
A brief history:
According to the first editor, the Rev G W Minns, ‘In the way of publications, nothing was contemplated by the original promoters…It was soon found, however, that ample material was forthcoming…’
Between 1885 and 1966, the Proceedings were published in Parts, usually three to a volume.
Occasionally, single volumes and supplements were issued, eg.
Volume 6 (1911) Papers to honour T W Shore on his departure from Hampshire.
Volume 11 (1930) was dedicated to the excavations on St Catharine’s Hill, carried out in the 1920s, with HFC support.
Volume 20 (1956) consisted of essays to honour Frank Warren, who had served as Hon Secretary for three decades.
Nothing was published in 1990. Volume 45 came out in 1989, and Volume 46 in 1991.
Volumes 67 (2012) and 75 (2020) were both published in two parts, as twin volumes.
The Editorial Board manages the production of Hampshire Studies. Information on how to submit a paper can be found in Notes for Authors. Generally speaking, a paper submitted by February will appear in the following November.

As the name suggests, this was a volume to celebrate the work and research of the ‘originator’ of the Hampshire Field Club; the final part was published in 1911.
