Place-names of Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (2015)
This handsome volume contains the place-name research – and much else besides – of Alfred Oscroft (1867-1939), brought to publication by his grandson, Professor James Oscroft Wilkes.
Alfred Oscroft was born and bred in Nottinghamshire, but by 1912 had moved to Southampton, working in the map examining department of the Ordnance Survey. One of his many interests was place-names, about which he wrote a series of articles for the Southampton Times.
On his death he left behind a significant manuscript on the subject and his grandson used this material to great effect in producing the book.
