Prideaux-Brune was Rector of Rowner (Gosport) from 1884 to 1919. Both branches of his family had a long pedigree, the Prideauxs in Cornwall, where he was born, and the Brunes in Hampshire. The first Brunes appear in the 1270s, and the estate and advowson of Rowner continued in their hands through the following centuries.
Edward Prideaux-Brune was schooled at Eton, Christchurch, Oxford, and the Theological College at Wells. Besides his religious studies and work as a parish priest, he listed topography and genealogy among his interests, as well as the ancient classics.
Prideaux-Brune was for many years a member of the Hampshire Field Club, serving as a Vice-President in 1913-14. On two occasions he hosted members’ visits to Rowner and wrote an account of Rowner Church and its connection with the Brune family for the Proceedings. He was a personal friend of the renowned Gosport artist Martin Snape (1852 – 1930).
In July 1883 he married Sophia, the eldest daughter of William Grant of Alverstoke. Their eldest son, Humphrey Ingelram, held a position in the English consular service in China and their only daughter, Cheston Isolda, became Mrs. Carpenter-Gamier of Rooksbury, near Fareham.
